Gallery of CRIBS and Figurines

Welcome to the web gallery of Maltese cribs and figurines!

During the Christmas season models of the nativity scene of Betlehem are a popular sight in Malta. However for those who cannot make it at that time or else want to enjoy cribs at other times of the year we thought of recreating that magical atmosphere right here on the web! This site is also intended to promote the interest in cribs and crib figurines in general and is dedicated to lovers of this artistic expression the world over.

Enjoy your visit and remember to sign the guest book!

Crib by Julian Scicluna (Christmas 1997)

Crib making is an old Maltese tradition dating back to almost three hundred years ago. The tradition was brought here from nearby Sicily were together with the rest of Italy, France, Poland, Germany and Spain, cribs are a popular form of christian and artistic expression.

Today this tradition lives on. Several local dilettante work hard for several months well before the Christmas season to create a detailed representation of that night when Jesus Christ was born in Betlehem. Cribs come in different forms and sizes. The materials used are also very varied. Papier mâché is the most common although cork, polystyrene and even pieces of rustic stone are also used to form the caves and scenery of the crib.
